Dear Parents,
WELCOME to Kindergarten! It's always exciting to start the year with a new group of students. I am looking forward to getting to know you and your child. Below are some details about our classroom.
Contacting Me
Kindergarten is a big step in the life of your child. I know that you will have questions from time to time. You may contact me in the following ways.
1. Write a note and send it in your child's folder. I will also use this folder for any other correspondence we may have throughout the year. The folder should be sent back and forth every day. Your child's work for the week will only be sent home on Friday's, but important information will be sent home periodically throughout the week. I will also check their folder every day for lunch money or any other correspondence, so please send these to school in your child's folder.
2. Call me at school. The phone number here at JLE is 828-4360, ext. 4300. This will give you the main office. You may need to leave a message, but I will get back to you as soon as I can.
3. Send me an e-mail. My school e-mail is [email protected]. I check this e-mail daily, but not always first thing in the morning.
4. If you are looking for information about our classroom then you can also find this information on my Weebly site. This site will have a copy of all letters sent home, including this packet, how to contact me and other information that may be helpful. The address is http://hcsd-peduzzim.weebly.com/. You can also reach my Weebly site through our district website. First click on the John L. Edwards link, then click directory. Here you will find pictures of all the teachers in our school. If you click on my name next to my picture this will bring you to the Weebly site as well.
Label Everything
Please put your child's name on EVERYTHING he or she brings to school. This may include a backpack, lunch box, sweater, coat, boots, gloves, umbrella, etc. Many children have similar items at school and this will help us tell which items belong to your child. Also, the school does have a lost and found area. It makes it much easier to find your child's items if their name is written somewhere on them.
Lunch
Hot lunch and an alternate choice of peanut butter and jelly are available every day. There will currently be no charge for our regular hot lunch but add on items, such as milk to add to a lunch from home, or ice cream, will still be a charge item. All students will have their own personal number that they will need to memorize and will follow them through school in the Hudson City School District.
Snack
In our class we use snack as a way to teach manners, patience, as well as working on conversation and social skills. You are expected to provide a snack from home for your child daily. A healthy snack is preferred, but I know this isn't always possible. Also, I like to have a store of extra snacks in the classroom for days when a snack may be forgotten. I prefer not to allow the children to go without a snack while others are eating. I could use your help with this. If you are able it would be helpful if you supplied a box of crackers, animal crackers, pretzels or any type of group snack that can be shared. I will keep these snacks and provide them to any kid that has forgotten their snack on a given day. Please note, this is not going to be used for the benefit of your child only and it is still expected that you will send in a snack for your child every day. This is for days when your morning may be a little hectic, or it just slipped your mind to send in a snack. This way you can be sure that your child will not go without. Any snack sent in will be for the benefit of the whole class and I will use them for any child that may have forgotten a snack at any given time. It is not necessary to send in extra snack, but it will be very helpful to our class stability and routine.
Arrival/Dismissal
The school doors open at 8am, 7:45 for those children who plan on having breakfast in school. The school day begins at 8:20 and all children arriving after this time will be considered tardy. If your child does arrive tardy they must go to the office first to receive a tardy pass and then make their way down to our classroom. It is very important that your child arrives at school on time. Our morning time will first be used to help teach social skills and then journal writing and Daily 5 will take its place. If your child is late they will miss this important instructional time.
Children going to breakfast will be expected to eat breakfast first and then come down to our classroom. I will be sending home a necklace stating that your child is planning on having breakfast in school. On the days your child has breakfast in school put this on them and the aides and other adults outside in the morning will make sure your child gets to the correct line for breakfast. Please note, breakfast will not be served after 8:20 or on days when the school has a delay for any reason. Your child must eat breakfast at home if either of these two occasions present themselves.
Dismissal is at 2:16. The whole class will walk out together to be dismissed. Those taking the bus will be walked directly to their bus by me. If you are picking up your child from school please also wait for them outside under the walkway by the main doors and I will walk them to you. Please allow us to make our way all the way around the circle before attempting to pick up your child. This is part of our dismissal routine and is put in place for the children's safety. Also, I would appreciate it if you didn't take your child out of our line without me first dismissing them. Again, the reason for this is safety, I want to make sure every child gets to their designated place safely. If you need to pick your child up early then you have to go to the office first to let them know and sign him/her out.
PBIS
Currently we are using a school wide behavior system called PBIS. We have three main rules that the students need to follow throughout the entire building, BE SAFE, BE RESPECTFUL, BE RESPONSIBLE. The rules are then broken down into each area of the building, i.e. the cafeteria, the playground, the classroom, etc., and the children learn how to follow the rules in each of those areas. The purpose of the program is to promote positive behavioral consequences so children who are caught following the rules will be given a Little Hawk ticket which will then be put in an envelope on our classroom door. On Friday's two children from each class are chosen from the envelope to receive a prize. The kids love receiving Little Hawks and hearing their name on the announcements on Friday.
Classroom Reports
A weekly report will be sent home letting you know what we have been learning for the week month. A copy of this report will also be put on my Weebly site. Any special activity information will be sent home at the time needed.
Morning Meeting/Sharing
Every day we have a time in the morning set aside for our morning meeting. At this time the children will greet each other, share something important to them, sing a song and then read and complete a message together as a shared writing activity. Attached to this packet you will find a list of sharing days. Your child will share on the day where you find their name. For example, if your child's name is on Monday then EVERY Monday they may bring something to school to share. Some ideas for sharing is a special book, picture, story, game or activity from home. We prefer the children choose to not share toys BUT if a toy is brought for sharing it can't include any weapons or other items that can be considered dangerous or inappropriate for school.
Specials
Each day your child will have a special class outside of our classroom. Please provide sneakers for gym days as only children with sneakers are allowed to participate in gym. Any day your child doesn't have sneakers he/she won't be allowed to participate and will have to sit out and watch. If you have an extra pair of sneakers at home it may be a good idea to send them to school to be left in your child's cubby. This way they will always have them when needed. It is very upsetting to the children when they aren't able to participate in our gym activities.
Important Information You Should Know
Dressing for School - Flip flops and belly shirts are not allowed in school. Closed back sandals are allowed in school but not on the playground. It is a good idea for your child to have sneakers for the playground. They will be the safest when running around with the other children. Again, it may be a good idea to keep an extra pair in your child's cubby. Also, our school has a tendency to fluctuate between hot and cold on a daily basis, especially in the winter months. Dressing in layers will help keep your child comfortable throughout the school day.
Attendance - If your child is absent for any reason then an excuse should be provided to the main office as to a reason for their absence. The excuse can be sent to school in their folder and then I will direct to the office so it can be put in your child's file.
Emergency Information - Please make sure that the pink and green forms are filled out to the best of your ability so that we can reach you in the case of illness or emergency. If the information on these forms changes at any time please inform the school as well. Also, please be sure the nurse knows of any medications, restrictions or other information that is pertinent to keeping your child safe during the school day.
Bus Tags - Every child will receive a tag stating the name of their teacher, room, bus number and/or walker status. Please be sure these tags are placed on a visible spot on your child's book bag and are worn daily. These tags help us make sure your child makes it to where he/she needs to go at the end of every day.
Homework - I hope to be starting homework in October and will be sending home more information at that time. Homework will consist of spending time reading with your child and a literacy and math activity that may pull in other areas or themes that we are working on at the time. A packet will be sent home on Monday with the expectation that you and your child complete it at your convenience and then return it completed on Friday.
Book Orders - Book orders will be sent home periodically throughout the school year. These are a great way to build your home library at an inexpensive cost. Also, our PTA will host 2 book fairs during the school year, one in the fall and one in the spring. These are also a great way to build your home library while helping raise money for our school at the same time.
I know this packet contains a lot of information. Please feel free to contact me at ANY time with questions or concerns you may have. The more we work together the better your child's kindergarten experience will be. I am looking forward to a great year working with all of you and your children!
